What is it?
The Presente Perfecto

The presente perfecto (also called pretérito perfecto compuesto) connects a past action to the present moment. Unlike the indefinido (simple past), this tense focuses on the relevance of the action to now — the action has just happened, or its effect is still felt today.

The formula — always two parts
haber (present) + participio pasado = he hablado ✓
🔗 The bridge tense: Think of it as a bridge — the action happened in the past, but it’s connected to the present. The bridge is built with haber. Never separate haber from the participle!
🇪🇸 Spain vs Latin America: In Spain, the presente perfecto is very common for recent past. In most of Latin America, the indefinido is preferred even for recent events.

Where in time?

The action happened in the past but its connection to the present is what matters — it’s still relevant now.

⚡ Key signal words: The presente perfecto loves words like hoy, esta semana, este año, alguna vez, nunca, ya, todavía no, últimamente… — all pointing to a period that includes now.

Step 1 — The auxiliary verb
Conjugating HABER

The first part is always a present-tense form of haber. You must memorise all six forms — they never change in this construction.

Haber — present tense
yohe
túhas
él/ellaha
nosotroshemos
vosotroshabéis
elloshan
⚠️ Never separate them! Nothing goes between haber and the participle — not even no. Correct: No he comido. Wrong: He no comido.
Step 2 — The past participle
Forming the Participio Pasado

The second part is the past participle. For regular verbs, the rule is simple and consistent.

-AR verbs
stem + -ado
hablado
hablar → hablado
-ER verbs
stem + -ido
comido
comer → comido
-IR verbs
stem + -ido
vivido
vivir → vivido
✨ The participle never changes! Unlike adjectives, the participle in the presente perfecto is always masculine singular. It doesn’t agree with subject or object: ella ha comido, ellos han comido.

escribir→escrito
hacer→hecho
morir→muerto
poner→puesto
romper→roto
ver→visto
volver→vuelto
cubrir→cubierto
freír→frito
ser/ir→sido/ido
🧠 Pattern spotting: Many end in -to (escrito, visto, hecho, puesto, roto, muerto, vuelto, abierto, cubierto) and -cho (dicho, hecho). Spot the pattern and learn them as a group!
