1. Es la… vs. Son las…

Use “Es la” ONLY for the hour of 1 (and for midday/midnight). Use “Son las” for all other hours (2 through 12).

• Es la una. (It’s 1:00.)
• Son las dos. (It’s 2:00.)
• Son las diez. (It’s 10:00.)

2. Adding Minutes (0 to 30)

Simply say the hour, then add “y” (and) followed by the minutes. Note these special terms:

• :15 → y cuarto (and a quarter)
• :30 → y media (and a half)
• Example: 4:15 → Son las cuatro y cuarto.
• Example: 1:30 → Es la una y media.

3. Subtracting Minutes (31 to 59)

After the half-hour, Spanish speakers typically jump to the next hour and subtract the remaining minutes using “menos” (minus):

• :45 → menos cuarto (minus a quarter)
• Example: 8:40 → Son las nueve menos veinte. (It’s nine minus twenty / 8:40)
• Example: 12:45 → Es la una menos cuarto. (It’s one minus a quarter / 12:45)

4. Times of Day (Partes del Día)

To specify the time of day, add these phrases:

• AM (morning): de la mañana
• PM (afternoon): de la tarde
• PM (night): de la noche
• Noon / Midnight: el mediodía / la medianoche

5. “At” a specific time

To say “at” a certain time, replace “Es la / Son las” with “A la” or “A las”.
• A la una (At one o’clock) | A las cinco (At five o’clock).
