Both ¿qué? and ¿cuál? can translate as “what?” or “which?” in English — but they follow different rules in Spanish. The key: use ¿qué? when you want a definition or explanation, or when it comes directly before a noun. Use ¿cuál? when you’re selecting or identifying something from a set of options — especially before the verb ser. Mixing them up is one of the most common errors at A2 level!
