🔗
31+ use “y”: From 31, use [ten] y [unit]: treinta y uno, cuarenta y dos, cincuenta y tres. Always three separate words.
Hundreds — 100 to 1000

⚠️
Gender agreement in hundreds: 200–900 agree with the noun: doscientas personas (fem.) vs doscientos euros (masc.). Only these hundreds change!
🧮
3 irregular hundreds: Note: quinientos (NOT cincocientos), setecientos (NOT sietecientos), novecientos (NOT nuevecientos). These must be memorised!
Large numbers — thousands & millions
Miles y millones

2 000

mil never takes “un”!
1 000 000
un millón
millón takes article un
2 000 000
dos millones
plural: millones
✅ Mil — no “un” before it!
Unlike English “one thousand,” Spanish uses mil alone (never un mil).
mil personas · dos mil euros · tres mil quinientos
⚠️ Millón + de + noun
When millón/millones precedes a noun directly, add de:
un millón de euros · dos millones de personas
📌 Writing large numbers
Spanish uses a period (.) as thousands separator and a comma (,) for decimals:
1.500 = one thousand five hundred | 3,14 = 3.14
Gender and special forms of numbers
Uno, una, veintiuno, cien…
UNO → UN before masc. noun
Apocopates before masculine nouns, stays una before feminine.
un libro · una mesa · veintiún libros · veintiuna mesas
CIEN vs CIENTO
Cien = exactly 100 (alone or before a noun). Ciento = 101+ or in compounds.
cien personas · ciento uno · ciento cincuenta euros
AMBOS / AMBAS — both
Agrees in gender: ambos/ambas = both of them.
ambos libros (both books) · ambas chicas (both girls)
WRITING OUT NUMBERS
Numbers 1–9 are often written in full; 10+ in numerals in formal writing.
tres personas · 15 personas · 150 personas
🔑
The “-one” problem: Any number ending in uno: veintiún, treinta y un, cuarenta y un (before masc.), veintiuna, treinta y una (before fem.). This applies to 21, 31, 41… 101, 121…
%
Porcentajes y Fracciones
Percentages, fractions, decimals & expressing proportions
Percentages
Los porcentajes — el por ciento
How to say percentages

50 por ciento
| Number | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | el uno por ciento | one percent |
| 10% | el diez por ciento | ten percent |
| 25% | el veinticinco por ciento | twenty-five percent |
| 50% | el cincuenta por ciento | fifty percent |
| 75% | el setenta y cinco por ciento | seventy-five percent |
| 100% | el cien por ciento | one hundred percent |
El treinta por ciento de la población vive en ciudades.
Thirty percent of the population lives in cities.
el + [number] + por ciento + de
Los precios subieron un cinco por ciento.
Prices rose by five percent.
un + por ciento (indefinite — expressing a rise/fall)
📌
El vs un with percentages: “el X por ciento” = a specific known percentage. “un X por ciento” = approximately / expressing change. Both are correct in context.

Medio vs la mitad: Medio/media = half (as an adjective before a noun): “media hora” (half an hour). La mitad = half (as a noun/pronoun): “La mitad de los estudiantes…”
Decimals — Los decimales
In Spanish, decimals use a comma, not a point:
3,14 → tres coma catorce
3.14 → three point fourteen
0,5 → cero coma cinco
0.5 → zero point five
El IVA es del 21%: veintiún por ciento.
VAT is 21%: twenty-one percent.
Note: del = de + el before “por ciento”

Cantidades y Expresiones
Quantity expressions, approximations & collective numbers
Approximate quantities
Cantidades aproximadas
Spanish has special words for “approximately X” using noun forms of multiples of ten:
| Spanish | Approximate number | Example |
|---|---|---|
| una decena | about 10 | una decena de personas |
| una docena | a dozen / about 12 | una docena de huevos |
| una quincena | about 15 / fortnight | una quincena de días |
| una veintena | about 20 | una veintena de euros |
| una treintena | about 30 | una treintena de años |
| una centena | about 100 | una centena de casos |
| un millar | about 1,000 | un millar de personas |
| un par | a couple / pair | un par de horas |
🔢
These are feminine nouns: Always use una: “una docena de huevos”, “una veintena de personas”. They require de before the noun they quantify.
Quantity expressions
Expresiones de cantidad
Key phrases for expressing quantities, amounts, and measurements:
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| la mitad de | half of | la mitad del precio |
| el doble de | double / twice as much | el doble de tiempo |
| el triple de | triple / three times | el triple del salario |
| la mayoría de | the majority of | la mayoría de los casos |
| una minoría de | a minority of | una minoría de la gente |
| la cuarta parte de | a quarter of | la cuarta parte del total |
| el resto de | the rest of | el resto de la clase |
| unos/unas + number | approximately / about | unas veinte personas |
| alrededor de | around / about | alrededor de cien |
💬
La mayoría + singular verb: Even though la mayoría de los estudiantes is plural in meaning, the verb can be singular: “La mayoría cree…” or plural “La mayoría creen…” — both acceptable.

Primero and tercero apocopate: Drop the -o before a masculine singular noun: “el primer piso” (not primero piso), “el tercer libro”. But: “la primera vez”, “la tercera planta” — no change for fem.!
🔢
Beyond 10th — cardinal often used instead: For 11th onwards, Spanish commonly uses cardinal numbers: “el capítulo once” (chapter eleven) rather than “undécimo”. Ordinals above 10 exist but are rare in everyday speech.
Ordinals in context
Using ordinals in real sentences
Vivo en el tercer piso.
I live on the third floor. (tercer — masc. sing. before noun)
Llegó en primera posición.
She arrived in first position. (primera — fem.)
Es la segunda vez que lo hago.
It’s the second time I do it. (segunda — fem.)
Alfonso décimo el Sabio.
Alfonso the Tenth the Wise. (royals — ordinal after name)
El capítulo once / el undécimo capítulo.
Chapter eleven — cardinal more common than ordinal above 10.
El primero de enero / el uno de enero.
The first of January. (primero OR cardinal 1)
Both forms used for dates — primero is more formal
Beyond 10th + fractions as ordinals
Ordinals 11th–100th
Exist formally but are rare in everyday speech — cardinal numbers are preferred above 10th in conversation.
| Position | Masc. | Fem. |
|---|---|---|
| 11th | undécimo | undécima |
| 12th | duodécimo | duodécima |
| 20th | vigésimo | vigésima |
| 21st | vigésimo primero | vigésima primera |
| 30th | trigésimo | trigésima |
| 50th | quincuagésimo | quincuagésima |
| 100th | centésimo | centésima |
💬
In everyday speech: Nobody says “quincuagésimo” — they say “el número cincuenta” or “en la posición cincuenta.” But for formal writing, awards, and anniversaries, these forms appear.
📅
Ordinals with titles: Spanish kings/queens use ordinals only up to 10: Carlos V = “Carlos quinto”, Juan Carlos I = “Juan Carlos primero.” From 10+: still said as ordinal (rarely cardinal).

3
Correct or Incorrect?
– Is the number/ordinal used correctly?
El primero piso está ocupado.
✘ Incorrect! Primero apocopates before a masculine singular noun → “El primer piso está ocupado.” Full form primero is only used when it follows the noun or stands alone.
Hay doscientas personas en la sala.
✔ Correct! Personas is feminine → doscientas (feminine form). Hundreds agree in gender with the noun ✓
Compré un mil euros en el banco.
✘ Incorrect! Mil never takes “un” in Spanish: just “Compré mil euros en el banco.” Unlike English “one thousand,” Spanish never says “un mil.”
El treinta y tres por ciento de la clase aprobó.
✔ Correct! Percentage expressed as el [number] por ciento ✓ Note: verb agrees with “el [number] por ciento” (singular) ✓
La tercera puerta a la derecha.
✔ Correct! Puerta is feminine → tercera (no apocopation needed for feminine). Full form ✓
Un millón personas viven en esta ciudad.
✘ Incorrect! Millón/millones requires de before the noun: “Un millón de personas viven en esta ciudad.”
