⏳
Both tenses talk about the past , but they aren’t interchangeable.
The pretérito perfecto (he comido) describes actions that happened
recently or are still connected to the present — often used with “today”, “this week”, “already”, etc.
The pretérito indefinido (comí) describes actions that are
completed and clearly in the past — used with “yesterday”, “last year”, “in 1992”, etc.
Warning: in Latin America and parts of Spain, the indefinido is used for both!
