In Spanish, expressing contrast or correcting statements requires specific connectors. Review these rules to master the difference between pero, sino, and sino que.
1 No… pero (Contrast)
We negate a statement and then add an apparently contradictory or unexpected aspect to it.
No llevo tatuajes, pero me gustan.
“I don’t have tattoos, but I like them.”
Mi hermana no es guapa, pero es muy inteligente.
“My sister isn’t pretty, but she is very smart.”
2 No… sino / sino que (Correction)
We correct a negated piece of information and completely substitute it with another.
SINO (Nouns / Adjectives / Adverbs):
Mi hija no se pinta los labios, sino los ojos.
“My daughter doesn’t paint her lips, but [instead] her eyes.”
SINO QUE (+ Conjugated Verb):
No estudia en casa, sino que va a la biblioteca.
“He doesn’t study at home, but rather goes to the library.”
