When the vowel inside a verb morphs — the shape-shifters of Spanish!

What are they?
The Shape-Shifters of Spanish!
Some Spanish verbs change the vowel in their stem when conjugated in the present tense. These are called verbos con cambio de raíz (stem-changing verbs) or “boot verbs”.
There are 3 types of change: e→ie, o→ue, and e→i. The endings of the verb don’t change — only the vowel inside the stem!
💡 The endings stay the same — only the STEM vowel changes!
⚠️Important: Stem changes happen in the present tense only. The infinitive and nosotros/vosotros forms keep the original stem vowel.
👢Why “boot verbs”? If you draw a box around the forms that change (yo, tú, él/ella, ellos/ellas), it forms the shape of a boot. Nosotros and vosotros are OUTSIDE the boot — they never change!

The Boot Pattern — All 3 Types
The coloured rows change. The grey rows (nosotros/vosotros) stay the same as the infinitive.
🧠Memory trick: Nosotros and vosotros are outside the boot because they have more syllables — the stress falls on the ending, not the stem, so the stem vowel stays relaxed!

🔍How to spot them in a dictionary: Stem-changing verbs are shown with the change in parentheses after the infinitive: querer (e→ie), poder (o→ue), pedir (e→i). Always look for this marker!
Type 1 — e → ie
🔴 e → ie Verbs
These verbs change e to ie in all forms except nosotros and vosotros. Found in -AR, -ER, and -IR verbs.
🎯-IR only rule: The e→i change exclusively occurs in -IR verbs. If you see an -AR or -ER verb with an e in the stem, it will never do the e→i change — it might do e→ie, but never e→i!
